For the next 8 weeks at Second Baptist we are studying the awesome book of James, my favorite book. James 1:22-25–Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it…
I am so thankful today for God’s word and what it means in the life of a Believer. It is so easy to listen to it and not really apply it to our lives. How many times does God speak to us on Sunday mornings, Sunday nights, at concerts or worship services and when we walk out those doors we forget what just happened? Mark Hall of Casting Crowns has devoted a song, pretty much a whole album to this concept, it is called “The Altar and The Door”. He writes “I will not lose my follow through, between the altar and the door”. I want to become a man that looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, the perfect law that gives true life. A man that keeps his commitments to God and man. The law of God is perfect, and it gives the only true freedom that we will ever have. It is available at one’s disposal. The constitution says that we have freedom of speech, freedom of religion etc… but those freedoms are being challenged every day. They are not guaranteed. The freedom that Jesus Christ gives is guaranteed, it was purchased with His blood.
This call in James to “do what it says” is at the center of all that James teaches. James gives us the “how to” of the Christian life and makes it pretty simple, that even a young Christian can understand it. I always tell new Christians to read the book of James. We have to keep God’s word fresh on our minds. The saying “Out of sight, out of mind” is so true. We must Keep the Bible in sight and in mind, and follow what it says!!
God is SOOOO amazing!!!! If you are struggling with something today, please give it up to Him. Experience His freedom. You will never regret it.
